Nosso Lar: Life in the Spirit World (Portuguese: Nosso Lar), also known as Astral City, is a novel by the Brazilian spiritist medium Francisco Cândido Xavier. First published in 1944, Nosso Lar tells the story of Andre Luis, a successful doctor, husband and father of three, who experiences an enlightening spiritual awakening after his death. Following his exit from the physical world, Andre finds himself in the spiritual world in a lower astral dimension of pain and suffering called the Umbral. After some time of confusion, despair, fear, hunger, thirst, pain, grief and desperation, Andre eventually turns inward and in desperation, repents and seeks help from higher powers. As Andre became more open to receive help from friends on higher dimensions, Andre is led out of the Umbral by these saintly friends and taken to “Nosso Lar,” (meaning “Our Home” in Portuguese). In Nosso Lar, Andre embarks on a new journey self-transformation — of learning humility and service, higher spiritual teachings, practicing self-inquiry, allowing inner transformation and inner peace to be developed.
